ARTIST BIO

Contemporary British artist, Gemma Compton grew up around nature, and this inspired her initial love of drawing. However, it wasn’t until she had a near death experience in a road traffic accident and fractured several bones in her spine that she focused all of her energies on her art.

Initially working as a print designer within the fashion industry, Compton’s eye for pattern and texture can be seen across all of her art. Her oeuvre explores themes of human emotion, set against the natural world. It is rich in symbolism drawn from flora and fauna with short life cycles.

She states: ‘My art will always come from a darker place. I try to create something beautiful but with a little ‘shadow’, a little truth that nothing is infinite and for life to exist there must also be death.’
